"PlayStation 2 sold 27,178 consoles in the last week on the back of the recent price-cut, an increase of 140 percent over the previous seven days.
As game fans in the UK swarmed to satiate their lust for all things Sony, Microsoft saw a surge on the back of its move on price last week, which saw Xbox cut from £200 to £160 across Europe. British gamers bought 6,802 Xboxes in the week ending August 31, an increase of 89 percent over the previous week.
Xbox is now outselling GameCube in the UK, which rose 11 percent to sell 4,825. But Nintendo´s insistence in software being the killer feature for success in the dirty business we call game is likely to be proved right when Super Mario Sunshine releases in Europe on October 4.
Rumours are now circulating that Microsoft may be looking to counter the threat of Nintendo´s triple A barrage with some spectacular retail offers: how does a free Xbox when you buy four games sound? Word is that some crazy deals are set to be announced at Microsoft´s X02 event in Seville on September 24."
