Blinx : ça s'annonce bien mais...

je trouve qu´il y a 2 ou 3 détails gênants d´après la preview de computerandvideogames.com.

"Blinx is the game that could genuinely turn around Xbox´s fortunes as it´s one of the brightest and most courageous concepts we´ve encountered in quite awhile. And it´s only on Xbox.
In short, you´re a cat with a hoover. You can play with your in-game world like a human can their videotapes. ie. You. can. control. time.

We´re now going to tell you what it´s like to play the world´s first 4D title. Firstly the controls: X = time control menu, A = hold it down to suck in objects and tap it
to expel them, B = jump (tap twice for a double jump), right Analogue, L and R = camera controls.

The first level is a dark but friendly looking townscape, where you have five minutes to destroy all the enemies and find the exit. Picture Tim Burton making illustrations for childrens´ books and you´d be close to what it looks like, with plenty of cartoon victorian housing and blue and orange lighting.

The enemies seem to be a race of blob-like creatures, with the main species looking like spacehoppers and the hovering enemies more like trumpets hanging off baloons. There are also frogs who increase in size as they swallow whatever you throw at them.

The gameplay is very simple - kill all the enemies to open the end of level portal. To do this, suck in some objects, then spit them out at the enemies, although if they touch you, you take a hit and the game rewinds to three seconds beforehand. Although you can only take three hits before you die.

When you kill an enemy, it leaves two or three jewels which are the "fuel" which makes time travel possible. If you collect three of the same jewel within a combination of four, you are granted a time manipulating temporary power-up. For instance:

Three Purple Pluses = Rewind

Three Orange Pyramids = Fast Forward

Three Blue Moons = Pause

Three Green Diamonds = Record

Three Yellow Stars = Slow
And to regain health: Three Hearts = Life up by one

Rewind is one of the more exciting power-ups, and using it near falling objects reverses their direction. If that object happens to be falling from atop a high tower, you can ride it all the way to the top, so you can see the potential available for puzzles to solve already.

Fast-forwarding is fairly straightforward, as it just speeds things up. We didn´t encounter any puzzles that demanded it´s use, so that´s all we know, but we can speculate that there will be problems similar to speeding up time when you´ve got an old lady walking in front of you and you have to catch the bus.

Pause stops time briefly. And that´s it. Useful for freezing objects and enemies in mid-air and wherever else they may be. Also jumping in water whilst the game is paused leaves some surreal holes in the water.

Record is a brilliant feature, allowing you to record yourself playing briefly, meaning huge promise for complex puzzles. Basically, you press the record button and every move you make for ten seconds or so is recorded. Then you are rewound back whilst the you that was just recorded plays out what you just did. The potential here is phenomenal. Imagine recording yourself holding a barrel and then double jumping off yourself to reach a high ledge, or how about using yourself to distract any enemy, whilst the present you runs out of it´s sight. Incroyable.

Which leaves us with the slow-down button, which is as literal as it sounds and affects enemies and objects alike.

We´ve played two of the levels and two bosses so far and first impressions are very good. We can honestly say our first go left us intrigued, but not completely blown away, due to the bland enemy design and the fact that the first and second levels do not require the use of the time controls to complete them.

Second time round, we decided to focus on the second level, and so enjoyed a far more exciting Venetian themed level, filled with stunning water effects and much more to do.

The level had secrets that needed the use of the rewind button to access and introduced a the frog enemy, as well as a falling bridge which can be rebuilt by rewinding next to it.

The stage left us with that taste for "just another go" and is possibly indication that the game will have a slow build up, rewarding you eventually with worthwhile and thoroughly engaging gameplay.

So to wrap up, the game is a slow starting, yet fantastic concept and kudos to the relevant parties for having the balls to make it. Admittedly, the Blinx character moves a little slowly for our liking and the first level is a little bland, but the Venician stage is a definite move in the right direction, and a great deal of the level´s challenge comes from the time limit feature.

Blinx, as we´ve said already, has enormous potential - let´s just hope the level design later in the game makes full use of the innovative time-control concept by the time of its release this winter. And please Artoon, take your time... Ahem."
