Due to fatally low sales, Microsoft is forced to discontinue the Xbox
January 28, 2002
After what seemed to be a succesful launch, Microsoft has now revealed that the Xbox will have to be discontinued, and all impending games are to be cancelled. This seems to fly in the face of previous market research where the Xbox was said to have sold in excess of one million units through the holiday season. However, it was revealed in a press release this afternoon, that those numbers were infact highly inaccurate, and that Microsoft had withheld sales data when their numbers did not live up to expectations.
In truth, the Xbox sold approximately 400,000 units from launch until the new year. This and the fact that Microsoft was making a loss of around $300 per console made it unfeasable to continue. Software sales were also somewhat low, with Halo being the only significant title.
Microsoft has also cancelled releasing the Xbox in Japan, as one could see the true desperation in the move to release a "Special Edition" in a last ditch attempt to recoup losses. Apparently, Japan was the straw that broke the camel´s back, as the cost of breaking into a new market with low projected sales was not deemed practical even by the money-laden Microsoft.
We here at IGN Xbox will continue to support the Xbox, despite the few games available much in the same way that we have supported the Dreamcast.
