How To Configure Port Forwarding
Port forwarding allows another computer on the Internet to initiate communication with yours for applications like videoconferencing. Also, some applications ( especially games) do not work well with NAT, but can be made to work correctly using port forwarding.
To configure port forwarding, you will need to know:
the port ( or " service") numbers used by the application you will be using ( see Application and Port Table below), and
the IP Address of the computer running the application.
The default IP address range for your network is 192.168.0.x, where x is automatically assigned to your computer by the DHCP server in the Netgear router. Note that if your PC´s IP address changes later, such as after a reboot, the port forwarding will not work. You may want to assign fixed addresses to PCs that will host services. Refer to your router´s Reference Manual.
Once you have the required information, you can proceed to the Ports Menu in your router to start entering the port numbers and IP address of the Server. Shown below is a typical setup for a web server, ftp server, and a game server. Depending on your router, the following screen may vary in appearance.

1 Since NAT causes your LAN to appear to be a single computer to the Internet, it is not possible to configure multiple servers of a particular application on the same LAN behind NAT.
2 Because White Pine CuSeeMe uses dedicated ports ( port 7648 & port 24032) to transmit and receive data, only one local CuSeeMe user is allowed within the same LAN.
3 NetMeeting users within the same LAN will not be able to connect to the same remote NetMeeting user because the remote user is not able to distinguish between local users with the same Internet IP address. However, NAT allows one local NetMeeting user to connect to multiple Internet users at the same time.
4 Some Quake servers do not allow multiple users to login using the same unique IP address, so only one Quake user will be allowed in this case. In addition, when a Quake server is configured behind NAT, the router will not be able to provide information of that server on the Internet.
5 Quake II has the same limitations as that of Quake I.
