Ok, I´m back as promissed, and I can´t believe it, but Unmasked is right. Let me be clear though, I´m getting some form of discrete stereo or surround sound in the multiplayer modes only. Here´s the specifics, though I´ve just expanded on the basics that Unmasked mentioned:

    1) The Wii must be set for "Surround Sound" in it´s main menu, even if you don´t have a surround sound receiver. If the Wii is set to "Stereo" like Activision customer support suggests, then you will not hear stereo OR surround.

    2) On my system, it didn´t matter if the remote was set to audible or not.

    3) It also didn´t matter which setting I had my receiver on. Direct (bypass), PLII music, PLII game, etc., all of the modes allowed for at least some kind of discrete stereo in the multiplayer modes.

    4) All of the local multiplayer modes worked: face-off, pro face-off, and battle. I tried one face-off online and it also had some discrete stereo, though it messed up quite often (I wouldn´t hear anything when I was playing, etc.). That may have been the fault of the online service.

    5) For the local multiplayer matches, I got at least stereo sound. When I set my receiver to any of the PLII modes I got a strange mix of stereo from my rear speakers as well, though seemingly not correctly encoded surround sound. If I played the only the notes for the left player, I would hear the guitar from the left front and left rear speakers. If I didn´t play anything, I didn´t hear anything from anything but the center channel. An odd thing happened when I played the only the notes for the left player, but listened to the right rear speaker. If I hit all the notes, I would hear the music that was comming from the center channel also playing the the right rear speaker. If I missed, then the right rear speaker would be completely silent. Obviously, the rear channels should be outputting some music all the time, even both of the guitars are silent. Since they aren´t, It seems that the music is still in mono during the multiplayer matches, and only the guitar part is in stereo. Also, the guitar in the rear speaker sounds the exactly same, as loud, etc. (to my ear at least) as the guitar in the front speaker, so even the guitar part doesn´t seem to be actually in surround, it just seems to send the same audio to the front and rear channels. In fact, I don´t think it is stereo sound, but actually the lack of sound comming from one speaker making it seem like stereo sound. This I can´t prove, but I further this hypothesis in the conclusion below.

Conclusion: It seems that the multiplayer modes do play the guitar part of the song in "stereo", though, since the music is still in mono, it seems the game is just not sending any audio to the appropriate speaker when one side misses a note. This makes it sound like discrete stereo, but it´s really just the absense of sound on one side when that side misses. That is how I interpret the results I got. I encourage everyone to try this out and see what conclusion they come to. If nothing else, if you play multiplayer, you should set your Wii to "surround sound" whether you have a surround sound system or not if you want the illusion of stereo sound in the multiplayer modes. One things still remains true though, Every aspect of the game except for multiplayer is still only in mono.

Edit: One more thing. Activision, you´re creating a lot of bad will towards your company for not making any public announcements concerning any of these problems. One look at the forums shows how angry people are, whether it be about mono sound, bad hardware, buggy online, or troubles with the website. Even DLC is becoming a popular issue. The only fixes, or even explanations, we´ve seen for any of these problems have come from your customers. People have figured out quick and dirty fixes that allow them to play the product you sold them and then abandoned. Now we´re doing play testing for you and figuring out exactly what some of the problems are. It´s pathetic that your customer support has been giving us the exact wrong "temporary solution" for the sound problem, telling people to set the Wii to stereo instead of of surround. Well, Activision, you´re welcome. And while none of us expect to ever see a paycheck for the time spent play testing and figuring out the exact nature of the sound problems, we will surely remember this experience and your silence. Forever.

Most of the Wii version of GHIII is MONO ONLY (no stereo or surround sound).
